Last week, two sheriffs declared their counties to be Second Amendment Sanctuaries, bringing the statewide total to 37 counties since February of 2020.

They were supported by resolutions or statements by at least four county commission boards and one district attorney.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jason Chennault issued the following open letter on January 25th:

There are at least two other counties where sheriffs have made Sanctuary-sympathetic comments, but I'm waiting until they put pen to paper before adding them to this list.

The following list is in roughly chronological order, with links to each county's official statement.

Two more county sheriffs have added their jurisdictions to the wave of counties declaring themselves as Second Amendment Sanctuaries in Oklahoma. Joining Logan, Stephens, Canadian, Bryan, Haskell, and Pittsburg counties are Cimarron and LeFlore. In all, eight county sheriffs and one District Attorney, and one County Commission board have publicly made this pledge since Wednesday.

DA supports Haskell County Sheriff's Second Amendment Sanctuary declaration

Well, this week has certainly been an active one regarding Second Amendment issues in Oklahoma.

First, on Wednesday, Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux declared Logan County to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary County, vowing to uphold the Second Amendment and refusing to enforce any act or order that infringes upon it. Anti-gun State Rep. Jason Lowe (D-OKC), who led the effort to repeal Constitutional Carry, decried the move.

Then, yesterday, Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney followed suit, adding his county as the second Sanctuary County in Oklahoma.

The floodgates opened today. Canadian County joined. Bryan County joined. Haskell County joined. Pittsburg County joined. Others will be doing likewise in the coming days, I'm sure.

Adding to the list is Chuck Sullivan, District Attorney for Haskell and Pittsburg counties. He lent his support in the following letter sent to Haskell County Sheriff Tim Turner:

Second Amendment Sanctuary County: Pittsburg becomes sixth to join

Pittsburg County Sheriff Chris Morris has joined the Second Amendment Sanctuary County movement, which has swept Oklahoma this week.

County Sheriffs that have declared Sanctuary status:
Sheriff Morris posted the following statement this morning:

Haskell, Bryan County sheriffs join 2A Sanctuary movement

The Second Amendment Sanctuary movement is sweeping through Oklahoma, after kicking off in Logan County earlier this week.

Haskell and Bryan counties have joined today as well, according to announcements by their respective sheriffs, becoming the fourth and fifth Second Amendment Sanctuary Counties in Oklahoma.

Haskell County Sheriff Tim Turner released the following statement this morning:

Bryan County Sheriff Johnny Christian issued this statement earlier today:

Sheriff declares Canadian County to be Second Amendment Sanctuary

Another day, another sheriff declares his county to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary County. Wednesday was Sheriff Damon Devereaux of Logan County. Yesterday was Sheriff Wayne McKinney of Stephens County. Today it's Sheriff Chris West of Canadian County:

Sheriff West posted the following on Facebook this morning:
I will be officially announcing today that I stand with other Oklahoma Sheriffs, and many across the country in support of the 2nd Amendment, and will proclaim Canadian County, Oklahoma to be a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County.
As Canadian County Sheriff I swore an oath to protect and support the Oklahoma and United States Constitutions, and there is no other RIGHT more sacred or vital in protecting the freedoms and liberty of American citizens than ensuring the protection/s afforded under the 2nd Amendment.
There is nothing more critical during a home invasion, burglary or other assaults and crimes against persons than the ability to protect yourself and your family.
We are very blessed to live in a state that understands and supports the gun rights of Oklahomans secured and guaranteed under the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America.
I believe that if every citizen who could legally carry a firearm would, not only would they and their families be safer, but our entire community would be safer as well.
I urge and encourage our Oklahoma Legislature and our United States Congressional Delegation to support the rights of American citizens, and oppose any and all attempts to pass state or federal legislation infringing upon the gun rights of Americans, or to support and pass any state or federal laws that would criminalize legal possession of firearms... making criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens.
Furthermore, I urge our Oklahoma Legislature and our United States Congressional Delegation not to support, pass or take any official actions that would be contradictory to the 2nd Amendment, resulting in the unnatural and immoral act of illegal confiscation of firearms from law abiding citizens, or the establishment of a “mandatory” state or national firearm registry, buyback or other firearms surrender type program/s.
In God We Trust!

Sheriff declares Stephens County a Second Amendment Sanctuary

Lowe responds to Logan County Sheriff's 2nd Amendment Sanctuary declaration

Lowe Releases Statement on Logan County Sheriff’s “Sanctuary County” Declaration

OKLAHOMA CITY -- State Rep. Jason Lowe (D-OKC) released the following statement after Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereau declared Logan County a “Second Amendment Sanctuary County”:

“I would hope that the sheriff of Logan County would uphold all of the Constitution and not just parts of it. This is a political stunt that has nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with the sheriff’s politics. It also doesn’t change that Oklahomans have yet to have their say on whether the state should require training before someone carries a firearm in public.”

Sheriff declares Logan County a Sanctuary County for the 2nd Amendment

Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux, the Oklahoma Sheriff's Association 2018 Sheriff of the Year, has declared Logan County to be a 'Second Amendment Sanctuary County', vowing to not enforce any law that infringes upon the right to keep and bear arms.
Sanctuary status for the 2nd Amendment is a grassroots movement that is sweeping the nation; Sheriff Devereaux appears to be the first government official in Oklahoma to join the action in any sort of official way.

The movement began in states like Illinois, where new Democratic leadership embarked on aggressive gun-control campaigns. It spread slowly but surely over the past few years, and with the election of Gov. Ralph Northam and a Democratic majority in Virginia intent on passing major gun-rights restrictions took off like wildfire in Virginia.
