Gloves off in CD5: Neese tears into Bice for misrepresenting VP's support

After a fairly tame primary, the 5th District GOP runoff is heating up, in multiple ways. Terry Neese is going after Stephanie Bice for claiming an endorsement from Vice President Mike Pence... who rather unhelpfully sent a campaign donation and letter to both candidates.

STEPHANIE BICE LIES TO VOTERS (AGAIN), PUSHES FAKE ENDORSEMENT FROM VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE

Oklahoma City, OK -- On July 23rd, Terry Neese received a letter from Vice President Mike Pence, along with a $1,500.00 campaign contribution, which thanked Terry for her support and partnership with the Trump Administration for the past three and a half years. Both the letter and campaign contribution amount was identical to what Stephanie Bice received on June 30th -- but Bice used her letter to imply an endorsement was made by Vice President Pence in the 5th District congressional race.

For the past twelve days, Stephanie Bice and top campaign surrogates have knowingly pushed this false endorsement to voters as a means to distract them from her tax-raising, dangerous record as a career politician.

Small: Stitt's rapid about-face on Medicaid expansion

A rapid about-face
By Jonathan Small

In the past decade, Republican governors in several states, eager for Obamacare federal dollars but aware their constituents opposed Obamacare, adopted “modified” versions of Medicaid expansion that included very minimal work requirements or premiums.

Almost all subsequently trashed those “conservative” reforms, usually after left-wing groups threatened to sue.

The same pattern can now be seen in Oklahoma, but at a much faster pace. Reportedly at the urging of Vice President Mike Pence and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma, Gov. Kevin Stitt told lawmakers Feb. 3 that he wanted Oklahoma to expand Medicaid through a federal waiver that would allow “moderate premiums and work requirements” for the estimated 628,000 able-bodied adults added to the welfare program, similar to Pence’s expansion of Medicaid in Indiana.

But by Feb. 16, Oklahoma Watch reported that Stitt’s deputy secretary of health said the state would actually expand Medicaid on July 1 with no work requirements or cost-sharing provisions. “After that, he said, the state plans to apply for a federal waiver that would incorporate many of the ideas in Stitt’s SoonerCare 2.0 plan,” Oklahoma Watch reported.

Thus, proposed “conservative” Obamacare/Medicaid expansion was abandoned in near-record time in Oklahoma—about three weeks. Sadly, the rapid abandonment of promises made to Oklahoma voters is what too often passes for government efficiency in Oklahoma.

These events prove Oklahoma’s Medicaid-expansion effort has never been about improving health outcomes or fiscal prudence. Instead, state politicians and special-interest groups cared only about getting federal money.

In the weeks ahead, we will witness lawmakers tap dance around another major Obamacare issue: Embracing Medicaid expansion means Oklahoma must come up with as much as $374 million annually to pay for it at a time the state already faces a shortfall of $85 million. Among the funding idea is, no surprise, a de facto tax increase: a hospital “fee.” The Democratic leader of the Senate had the candor to note that fee (which is being touted by Republicans) will drive up the costs of premiums for Oklahomans. Her GOP counterparts change the topic when that fact comes up.

The results of an Oklahoma embrace of Obamacare are obvious. Taxes will go up and so will health care costs. But health outcomes will remain unchanged, as can be seen by the experience of other states that expanded Medicaid like Colorado, Indiana and Arkansas. Indiana had to spike a teacher pay raise last year due to rising Medicaid costs, and citizens in those states now face higher medical bills, as even left-wing organizations concede in Colorado.

Oklahoma Republicans say they must offer an “alternative” to a Medicaid expansion plan scheduled for a public vote this year, but so far their alternative is almost a carbon copy of the ballot measure. A true alternative would involve rejecting Obamacare and focusing on real solutions, not me-tooism.

Final Week: Electoral College Map

If the presidential election followed the current polling averages in each state, here's what the result would be:

Click the map to create your own at 270toWin.com

The trend in the last few days has definitely been pro-Trump, with the fallout of the renewed FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails giving momentum to the GOP nominee.

Based on polling, Clinton currently leads with 294, with Trump at 244.

The three best paths to a Trump victory are:

  • NC + NV + NH + ME CD2 = Trump 270, Clinton 268
  • NC + CO + NH = Trump 272, Clinton 266
  • NC + CO + NV = Trump 274, Clinton 264

32 Days Left: Electoral College Map

If the presidential election followed the current polling averages in each state, here's what the result would be:

Click the map to create your own at 270toWin.com

The last two weeks have not been good for the Trump campaign. In the two weeks since I last posted an electoral map, Trump has lost his lead in North Carolina and Nevada, and the gap between him and Clinton has increased ever-so slightly in states like Florida and Pennsylvania.

Polling hasn't caught up with any fallout from the vice-presidential debate, where Trump's running-mate Mike Pence trounced Tim Kaine. However, vice-presidential debates tend to have less impact on the race, and the viewing audience for this debate was smaller than any VP debate since 2000.

If this map held the same on election, but with Trump winning Florida, North Carolina, and Colorado, it would be a 269-269 tie.

2016 GOP Primary Madness, 'Elite Eight' results

The Elite Eight of our 2016 GOP Primary Madness has come to a close, and here are the results (with links for more details on the voting):

The closest matchup was in Division 'D', where Mike Huckabee received 52% to Mike Pence's 48%. This week, the Palin vs. Bachmann race got the most attention, with 412 votes cast. Rick Santorum's defeat of top-seed Marco Rubio makes him the only candidate in the Final Four who is not a No. 1 seed.

Voting in the Final Four round begins tomorrow morning, and will continue through Monday.

CPAC 2010 Straw Poll Results

The 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), hosted by the American Conservative Union, started Thursday, and concluded on Saturday. Somewhere around 10,000 conservative and libertarian activists attended this year's conference - said to be a 20% improvement over last year.

A straw poll was taken, standard fare at CPAC. Here are the results.
CPAC 2010 Straw Poll (Poll details - PDF)
  • Ron Paul - 31%
  • Mitt Romney - 22%
  • Sarah Palin - 7%
  • Tim Pawlenty - 6%
  • Mike Pence - 5%
  • Newt Gingrich - 4%
  • Mike Huckabee - 4%
  • Mitch Daniels - 2%
  • Rick Santorum - 2%
  • John Thune - 2%
  • Haley Barbour - 1%
  • Other - 5%
  • Undecided - 6%
Straw poll of 2,395 CPAC registrants, February 18-20, 2010
Ron Paul continues his track record of winning straw polls (or should we say, over-performing?). This is where the poll needs to be clarified.

Only about 25% of the CPAC attendees bothered to vote in the straw poll. 13% of voters were associated with a CPAC cosponsor (such as the NRA, Americans for Prosperity, the Heritage Foundation, the John Birch Society, and the highly-controversial GOProud - a gay conservatives group), 32% were individuals (i.e. non-college age), and 48% were students.

Fiscal issues came out way on top for the attendees; pro-life and pro-traditional marriage issues ranked very low. Not an accurate sampling of the grassroots Republican, or the primary electorate.

Age-wise, 54% were between 18 and 25 years old, 19% were 26-40, 14% were 41-55 years, and 10% were over 55 years of age. 64% of voters were male, 30% female, and 6% refused to answer.

So, the typical voter in the straw poll was a young, college-attending male, focused on fiscal issues. In other words, the standard Ron Paul supporter. In light of this, and given the strong libertarian bent of CPAC, I am not surprised that Ron Paul won the straw poll.
