State legislators urge US Senate to protect rural postal services

Oklahoma Lawmakers Urge U.S. Senators to Protect Reliable Rural Postal Service

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 19th) — As the U.S. Senate considers nominees to the United States Postal Service Board of Governors, Oklahoma lawmakers and rural community leaders are urging the state's U.S. Senators to ensure the Postal Service remains committed to dependable mail service for rural communities.

State Rep. Nick Archer, R-Elk City, Majority Caucus Vice Chair, whose district spans parts of several western Oklahoma counties, said reliable rural mail service is essential to the communities he represents.

"Reliable rural mail service is deeply personal to me," said Archer. "My grandmother served as postmaster in Texola, Oklahoma, from 1987 until 2005. When she retired, the post office closed. I've seen firsthand what the loss of postal service means to a small rural community. In my district, dependable mail remains critical for producers, small businesses, seniors receiving medications, and families handling important documents. I hope our federal delegation will vet these nominees carefully and ask how they intend to protect reliable service and ensure rural states like Oklahoma continue to have a voice in postal policy.”

State Rep. Josh Cantrell, R-Kingston, Majority Caucus Secretary, said the people making decisions about the future of the Postal Service must understand the realities facing rural America.

"The people making decisions about the future of the Postal Service should understand the realities facing rural America," said Cantrell. "I encourage the Senate to carefully evaluate these nominees and ensure they are committed to maintaining reliable mail service for communities that don't always have other options. Rural Oklahoma deserves to know its voice will be represented when those decisions are made.”

State Rep. Daniel Pae, R-Lawton, Assistant Majority Whip, said the Postal Service's commitment to serving every community must remain a priority as the Senate considers nominees to the USPS Board of Governors.

"The Postal Service's obligation to serve every community is a promise that should never be taken for granted," said Pae. "The Board of Governors should be guided by leaders who understand the importance of preserving reliable service in rural states like Oklahoma and ensuring every community continues to have a voice in the future of the Postal Service.”

State Rep. David Smith, R-Arpelar, an Army veteran and chair of the House Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, said dependable mail service remains essential for many rural Oklahomans.

"In many parts of rural Oklahoma, the mailbox at the end of the road is still a lifeline,"said Smith. "Rural families don't think about the Postal Service until it isn't there. Veterans waiting on medications, ranchers running a business and neighbors living miles from town all depend on reliable mail service. I hope the Senate ensures the next Board of Governors understands what that responsibility means for communities like ours.”

The USPS Board of Governors establishes the Postal Service's long-term policies and provides oversight for an institution that remains vital to rural communities, where residents and businesses often have few alternatives for shipping, commerce, and delivery of medications and other essential items.
