Absurdity: Lewis Spring's Statements About Tom Coburn

Lewis Spring is running against U.S. Senator Tom Coburn. Obviously, hasn't got a clue about Tom Coburn's record.

Spring says this on his campaign website: "[Coburn] is also one of the biggest pork barrel spenders in the United States Senate."

Uh, excuse me? Coburn is one of the most prominent crusaders against pork-barrel spending.

He also states that "[Coburn] continues running for office even after promising to abide by his own self proclaimed term limits." Again, wrong. Coburn pledged to run for no more than three terms when he was in the U.S. House. He served three terms, from 1994-2000. When he ran for Senate in 2004, he pledged to run for no more than two terms. He is finishing up his first term in the Senate; if elected (as he will be, barring major health issues on his part), he will serve a second and final term in the Senate.

Spring doesn't quit while he's way behind, though. He rails against Israel and the "Zionist movement in America". He also states that while he won't be taking campaign donations, he will be selling copies of his country music CD for $12, which will be funding his run.

While I do encourage people to get involved in politics, and run for office, sometimes it can be... embarrassing...

Lewis Spring - Tom Coburn's GOP Opponent?

U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Muskogee) may have finally drawn an opponent. One would assume that this opponent is a Democrat, but not so - he's a Republican.

Lewis Spring of Hugo has launched a website advertising his candidacy for U.S. Senate. This is not Spring's first time this election cycle to put his toe into the political waters; on April 9th of last year, he sent an open letter (of which I have a copy) to President Obama announcing his intent to run for the 2nd Congressional District, against Dan Boren.

Spring is a retired school teacher, and has been married to his wife Susan for 33 years. He states on his website that his platform "calls for a return to the principles that the Founding Fathers created in our Constitution, as well as the abolishment of the Federal Reserve System. Spring also proposes a federal law making it a criminal act for a government official to lie while serving in their official capacity."

Spring has not filed official papers with the Federal Election Commission, so it remains to be seen if he will actually go through with running, given his very recent history in the 2nd District race.

2nd District GOP Meeting in Muskogee Today

The Second District Republican Party will be holding a district-wide meeting this afternoon in Muskogee, at the Public Library from 1pm to 3:30pm.

Congressional Candidates Howard Houchen and Dan Arnett will be speaking, along with several other people considering jumping in the race.

Howard Houchen: A GOP Candidate Against Boren

Howard Houchen considers bid for 2nd District Congress

HUGO - Howard Houchen of Hugo, has confirmed that he is "seriously considering a run for the U.S. Congress" in 2010.

Houchen, a Republican from Hugo, has a Bachelors degree in Political Science and a Masters in National Security Studies with an extensive international and small business background.

At present, Houchen says he is discussing a possible run for the District 2 Congressional seat presently held by Dan Boren, and will consider making a formal statement at a later date.

There are several rumored and/or announced GOP candidates for Boren's congressional seat (among them Dan Arnett of Okmulgee, and Lewis Spring, also of Hugo). I have personally spoken with potential candidates as well.

Whatever happens, there will be an active primary for the Republican Party when it comes to the 2nd Congressional District.
