ODOC to purchase Lawton Correctional Facility, take over operations July 25
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 5th) – The Oklahoma Department of Corrections has officially entered an agreement to purchase the Lawton Correctional Facility from The GEO Group. ODOC will assume operational control on July 25, a major milestone in strengthening the agency’s transformative presence.
This transition brings the State of Oklahoma one step closer to a fully unified corrections system, as Lawton Correctional Facility is the last remaining privately operated prison used by the state. Once the purchase is approved by the Oklahoma Board of Corrections and finalized, ODOC will assume full responsibility for facility operations, staffing and programming.
“We look forward to bringing our high-quality operations, processes and compassionate environment to the Lawton facility,” said ODOC Director Steven Harpe. “This change ensures consistency in standards, transparency and accountability across all ODOC institutions.”
The transition aligns with ODOC’s agencywide goals of modernizing operations and investing in a correctional system that prioritizes safety, rehabilitation and innovation. The agency will work closely with current employees and local partners to ensure a smooth handover and continuity of operations.
As with ODOC's takeover of operations at Allen Gamble Correctional Center in Holdenville, Okla., all current LCF employees will be offered employment pending the successful completion of background checks.
“This move not only strengthens our public safety infrastructure but also reflects our commitment to better outcomes for staff, inmates and the people of Oklahoma,” Harpe said.
This transition represents more than a change in operations – it is an opportunity to extend ODOC’s culture of accountability, honor and rehabilitation to every corner of the state. The agency remains committed to transforming lives and continuing to build a safer, stronger Oklahoma.
