Rep. Olsen: The wrong kind of history is being made in the Pro-Life movement

The wrong kind of history is being made in the Pro-Life movement
By State Rep. Jim Olsen (R-Roland)

Something unprecedented is happening in the Pro-Life movement.

What do I mean?  Am I speaking of the overturning of Roe v. Wade last summer?  That was wonderful news, but no, that's not what I am referring to.

I am actually speaking about some very bad news.

First, let me give the background here.  Last year, the Oklahoma Legislature passed two outstanding bills to protect innocent, unborn life.  HB 4327 addressed civil law.  It was much like the Texas law on abortion that allowed civil lawsuits.  Our law was even better, because it went all the way back to conception, the beginning of life.

The other bill we passed addressed criminal law.  SB 612 made abortion a felony, with punishments up to 10 years in prison, and a fine up to $100,000.

These two bills combined make us the strongest state in the union to defend innocent, unborn life.  This is where we always wanted to be.  It is a dream come true!

So, what is the bad news then?  The bad news is that there is an organization that wants to weaken, water down, and partially dismantle our strongly pro-life laws.  Senate Bill 834 is a pro-choice bill that would add several exceptions to our laws against abortion, repeal our law against self-induced abortion, and protect contraceptives that act as abortifacients.  This is a significant loosening of our current law.

Who, then, is behind this?  Is it Planned Parenthood?  No, it's not them.  What about the Democratic Party?  Surely they are working behind the scenes to undercut our excellent abortion laws?  No, it's not them either.  Okay, maybe it's one of the Democratic state legislators?  No, they are not guilty either.

The group working behind the scenes to make this happen is Oklahomans for Life.   Yes, we are speaking of one of the most well-known pro-life groups in the state!  Tony Lauinger is the president of this group, and he has been working very hard lobbying legislators to vote for the pro-choice bill, Senate Bill 834.

This then, is the history being made in the pro-life movement.

An ostensibly pro-life organization is working to undercut, dilute, and weaken the law that protects unborn babies in Oklahoma.

This pro-life group is lobbying legislators to vote for a pro-choice bill, Senate Bill 834.   This has never happened before, with a pro-life group anywhere in the country, lobbying to weaken a state's laws against abortion.  This is absolutely unprecedented.

Oklahoma is leading the nation in protecting unborn life. Why should we abandon ground just recently won? We must not sound a retreat after having been victorious. Lives depend on our steadfastness in this fight.

Mr. Lauinger's belief is that the far left will run a state question that will enshrine abortion-on-demand in the Oklahoma Constitution, so we should sacrifice some of the babies to keep the rest.  If we do this, then the left will back off, and they won't run a state question.  He believes that this is wiser and more sustainable.

This is preposterous!  The left will push for abortion-on-demand regardless of what we do.  Has it ever done any good to bow down to the far left?  No, it never has.  This is absolutely not an issue to compromise.

Many good people have worked a number of years to get our state to the proper place in protecting innocent unborn babies.  We are ready, willing, and able to continue working hard to defend these laws where they stand.  We shall also continue to look to the God of Heaven to help us to defend the right to life that ALL of the babies inherently possess.

Let me finish with a question.  Is an organization still pro-life, if they lobby to make more permissive a state's abortion laws?

  2. This is VERY disturbing. Reminds me of the response we got from them about the Human Life Amendment. I was told they would oppose it if we tried to pass it, if you recall. We always joked about what these folks would do with their time and for a job when Roe Vs Wade was finally overturned, since it seemed many pro life groups were more dedicated to remaining relevant and employed than effective or absolute.

  3. This is par for the course for the pro-life industry. All Oklahomans that truly care about obeying God in protecting human life should watch the free documentary (made in Oklahoma by Oklahoma pastors) called "A Storm Comes Rolling Down the Plain". It is definitely an eye-opener. After watching that, you might consider also watching "Babies Are Murdered Here" and "Babies are Still Murdered Here".

  4. Abortion is murder. Therefore it must be abolished and only abolished. No compromise with lives on the line. No bargaining some lives for others. Look the murderous dead in the face and demand nothing less than every last baby be protected by law.
