Rand Paul Announces for Senate... on Rachel Maddow?!

Rand Paul, son of former Presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul, announced his intention to form an exploratory committee to run for the Senate seat currently held by Jim Bunning (R-KY).

He announced on the Rachel Maddow Show. Seriously, what conservative goes on such a liberal show to announce for office?!

  1. Maybe Rand Paul was trying to reach as wide an audience as possible. The concept of liberty is a popular one, even if our party has largely abandoned it in favor of larger government, more Medicare ponzi-scheme economic acrobatics and biometric data collection and sharing. Suppose some leftist pacifist crab incubator who considers himself a linear descendant of the hippies hears the Pauls' message on Maddow. The talk of liberty strikes a nerve, he does some studying and becomes a Constitutionalist. Do you really think neocon apologists like Rush, Hannity or O'Reilly are going to give the guy a platform, or that their listeners are smart enough to get it?

  2. I doubt any "respectable" (and I use that term very loosely) conservative shows would have him on. They're too busy cozying up to Jeb and Mitt, or too preoccupied with talking about teleprompters.

Don't discount this kind of showcase though. I've personally seen many of the "politically lost" on the left come to their senses after hearing Ron Paul. And I half suspect Maddow might be just such a person. She's been very critical of the Obama administration recently, and she just might be coming to realize the traditional "left-right" paradigm is a farce -- that both Republicans and Democrats tend to want Big Government, just suited to their own tastes, and that the root problem is Big Government itself.

  3. What "conservative" show would be more appropriate? Hannity? He's not really conservative, he's just a neoconservative shill, and hates Ron Paul. Limbaugh? The guy who supported Romney, the until-recently-pro-choice, state-run healthcare program candidate? Hardly very conservative there. Glenn Beck, the guy who suggested many of his father's supporters were potential domestic terrorists? (Yeah, he's since backpedaled away from that.) Huckabee's show? Oh, you mean the guy who is for high taxes, the unconstitutional nanny-state national smoking ban, carbon cap and trade, expanded funding of AIDS programs in Africa, etc, etc? Once again, not very conservative.

While you might be more comfortable if he had announced on one of the above shows, I sure wouldn't. There's only one really principled show on a major network I know of and that's Nepolitano's Freedom Watch, and Rand Paul tried to get on there, but was beat out by Oklahoma's own RJ Harris (running against Cole for the 4th District).
