Voters in Muskogee charted a new course yesterday, with the election perhaps the most "outsider" mayor since John Tyler Hammons in 2008.
Don't think your vote matters? Ryan Lowe defeated former city councilor James Gulley in the mayoral race by a mere 11 votes out of 3,823 cast: he won with 1,917 votes (50.14%) to Gulley's 1,906 votes (49.86%).
Incumbent councilor Jaime Stout was ousted by challenger Jeremy Schuler 52.42% to 47.58%.
In Ward 1, sitting councilor Shirley Hilton-Flanary held onto her seat (70.78% to 29.22% over Ashley Davis), while the half-term seat vacated by previous councilor CB Abel will be a runoff between Sheila Dause and interim councilor Mike Brawley, who received 38.69% and 34.19% respectively (Daniel Chepkauskus came in third with 27.12%).
Ward 3 councilor Melody Cranford (52.67%) defeated challengers Charles Crawford (36.51%) and Nina Ground (10.82%). I hope to see Crawford give it another go at some point; as a newer and vocal resident of Muskogee, he's got a lot of ideas that I find interesting about revitalizing and promoting growth in Muskogee.
Ward 4 will see a runoff between current councilor Tracy Hoos (48.56%) and former councilor Traci McGee (23.95%). Greg Webb (20.68%) and Wayne Divelbiss (6.81%) finished third and fourth.
