Poll finds 65% support cutting or eliminating Oklahoma's income tax

Poll: Oklahomans support income-tax repeal

OKLAHOMA CITY (September 28, 2023) — A new poll shows Oklahomans overwhelmingly support cutting the state income tax and gradually eliminating the tax entirely.

According to the survey, conducted by WPA Intelligence (WPAi) on behalf of the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs (OCPA) and Americans for Prosperity (AFP), 65% of Oklahoma voters support cutting the state income tax, while only 22% oppose income-tax cuts. The survey also found that 67% of voters support elimination of Oklahoma’s income tax.

“The personal income tax is a penalty on work,” said OCPA President Jonathan Small. “Oklahomans understand that it is important to encourage work and investment in our state, not discourage it. At the same time, families want control of their own money. Gradual income-tax elimination achieves both those goals.”

Gov. Kevin Stitt has called a special legislative session, which will convene on Oct. 3, to cut the state income tax and put Oklahoma on the path to full elimination of the personal income tax. Efforts to eliminate the personal income tax have typically called for using growth revenue to gradually reduce the tax over time without the need for offsetting budget cuts.

“Governor Stitt and the Oklahoma Legislature have an opportunity to create transformational change in our tax system that will attract more businesses to our state, grow the economy, and give families some relief from the high inflation of the Biden presidency,” said Americans for Prosperity State Director John Tidwell. “Bidenomics has had a punishing effect on every single Oklahoman, so it’s no surprise that Oklahomans want state policymakers to come to their aid by cutting taxes.”

The WPA Intelligence survey also found that:

83% of Republican voters support reducing the personal income tax, as do 57% of Independents and even 38% of Democrats.

82% of Republicans support elimination of the personal income tax, as do 64% of Independents and 43% of Democrats.

The WPAi survey was conducted from September 23 to 25, 2023. The study has a sample size of 523 likely voters with a margin of error of ±4.3% in 95 out of 100 cases.
