Angry senator drops accidental truth bomb in debate tirade

This week, two state senators from different ends of the Republican caucus plainly told the truth about the stakes of this year's Republican primary election: it's about who gets to control the Oklahoma State Senate going forward. Will principled conservatives hold the reins for the first time, or will the establishment moderates continue their reign of power?

Senate Majority Whip Bill Coleman (R-Ponca City) absolutely erupted in anger at a Senate District 10 candidate forum in Ponca City this week, dropping an accidental truth bomb in the middle of a tirade against Senate conservatives.

Coleman said: "This election is about who is gonna control the Oklahoma State Senate, and I do not want it to be the Freedom Caucus."

My friends in Southwest Oklahoma,

The system at our State Capitol is deeply broken, and you’ve made it clear that you see it. Now it’s time to vote like it. 

Years of the same insider politics have delivered moral drift, crushing financial pressure on our families, and a dangerous competency crisis where loyalty to leadership, self-enrichment, and lobbyist cash matter more than wisdom, principle, or real results for the people.

Common-sense governance has been replaced by backroom games that erode our communities and values. Hardworking Oklahomans are treated like ATMs instead of neighbors with strong faith, families, patriotism, and deep roots.

This session, establishment Republicans schemed to kill my motion to protect Medicaid and taxpayer benefits from illegal immigrants. That tells you everything. Too many “Republicans” campaign conservative but govern like liberals more accountable to lobbyists and Capitol insiders than to you.

This is exactly why we need the @OKFreedomCaucus leading the fight. We don’t need more establishment politicians growing government, managing decline, enriching their buddies, patting each other on the back, and protecting the status quo.

We need faithful, courageous fighters who cannot be bought and are committed to restoring competent, constitutional government that puts Oklahoma families and our values first.

This is about saving what matters for the next generation.

Both senators are absolutely correct: much is at stake. The trajectory of Oklahoma government will be decided by the 2026 Republican primary election. 

Current Senate Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton defeated conservative David Bullard by one single vote in the last caucus election. Dozens of conservative bills that Bullard would have supported as Pro Tem never were allowed to see the light of day under Paxton's leadership.

Coleman is one of several Senators in particular being targeted for defeat by grassroots conservative groups, such as the Oklahoma 2nd Amendment Association:
