OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 15th) – The Oklahoma Freedom Caucus strongly opposes State Question 836, the proposed constitutional amendment that would impose California's flawed jungle primary system on Oklahoma. We encourage all Oklahomans to DECLINE TO SIGN the petition.
Key reasons SQ 836 should be rejected
- Driven by out-of-state money: Signature collectors have been targeting Christmas gatherings and have admitted to being paid operatives from outside Oklahoma, funded by special interests aiming to radically alter our state's Constitution for their own leftist agenda.
- Imports California's failed system: SQ 836 mirrors the "jungle primary" used in California, where Kamala Harris advanced to and won her 2016 U.S. Senate seat in an all-Democrat general election after Republicans were shut out – we refuse to let outsiders "California our Oklahoma" and risk similar outcomes that dilute conservative representation.
- Violates party association rights: This forces political parties to allow non-members to influence nominee selection, infringing on the First Amendment freedom of association and weakening the ability of Republicans to choose true conservative candidates. We don’t let atheists and non-members vote on who the next church pastor should be, the members of the church get to decide. Democrats shouldn’t get to vote on the Republican nominee.
- Threatens conservative dominance: In a strong Republican state like ours, open primaries would empower leftists, moderates, and outsiders to manipulate outcomes, sidelining grassroots conservatives.
The OKFC urges all Oklahomans to DECLINE TO SIGN the petition. Let your family and friends know that if they are approached at any upcoming Christmas or holiday event to sign the petition, they should DECLINE TO SIGN and ask the person how much they are being paid to come into Oklahoma to collect signatures. The OKFC will continue to stand for limited government, constitutional principles, and protecting Oklahoma's conservative future; and we fully oppose SQ836.
