Gov. Stitt, AG Drummond trade barbs over cooperating with Trump Medicaid fraud audit

One of the positive things to look forward to after this year will be the end of this endless bickering and fighting between Gov. Kevin Stitt and Attorney General Gentner Drummond (who I certainly hope does not become Oklahoma's next governor...). Drummond wouldn't agree with Stitt if Stitt said the sky was blue.

Governor Stitt Directs Attorney General to Align Efforts with Trump Administration Crackdown on Medicaid Fraud

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 20, 2026) - Today, Governor Kevin Stitt directed the Attorney General to cooperate with the Trump administration’s audit of Medicaid Fraud Control Units and ensure that Oklahoma taxpayer dollars are not being misused by bad actors.

The letter reads, in part:

“President Trump’s audit is aimed at aggressive enforcement, accurate documentation, and real accountability from Medicaid providers. That is the right agenda, and Oklahoma should be leading it.

“That is why your recent audit request of the Oklahoma Health Care Authority is so concerning. Rather than reinforcing the very guardrails the Trump administration is working to strengthen, your request appears politically motivated and aligned with the interests of major donors who have opposed the State’s recent efforts to increase accountability and protect taxpayers.”

Oklahoma’s managed care initiative, SoonerSelect, has increased transparency and accountability in our state’s Medicaid programs. Following President Trump and Vice President Vance’s recent fraud task force announcement, Governor Stitt emphasized the need for statewide cooperation to ensure our Medicaid programs are serving the most vulnerable in our state, not lining the pockets of individuals trying to defraud the system. Success requires quick action when it comes to complaints filed with the Attorney Generals Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

Drummond fires back at governor over Medicaid audit request

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 20, 2026) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond today responded to Governor Kevin Stitt's attempt to block an independent audit of the state agency responsible for overseeing Oklahoma's Medicaid program.

"The governor and OHCA, which is responsible for overseeing Oklahoma's Medicaid program, have chosen to defend the insurance companies rather than the people they serve. This is not the Medicaid accountability President Trump is calling for, and it is not the accountability Oklahomans deserve. In fact, Oklahoma leads the nation in Medicaid fraud enforcement, and I will be meeting with Vice President JD Vance next week to discuss our state's success.

"The people of Oklahoma have every right to know whether their tax dollars have paid for gender-transition drugs and surgeries, including for minors, yet the governor would rather protect the system than scrutinize it. Instead of providing answers, the governor is telling Oklahomans to stop asking questions. I will leave the public to draw its own conclusions about why the governor is so determined to keep them from learning the truth."
