Gov. Stitt opposes Abolition of Abortion Act; so what does "pro-life" even mean?

Pro-lifers like to say things like "Abortion is murder", "Life begins at conception", "We need to end abortion", and "Protect the unborn".

So why is it that a bill that matches that rhetoric and would actually abolish abortion - which continues in this state even after the overturning of Roe v. Wade through "self-managed" abortion pills - is a bridge too far for "pro-life" Governor Kevin Stitt?

Being "pro-life" is just about the cameras, awards, ratings, and elections. The actions of pro-life elected officials are not logically consistent with the rhetoric of the movement. What does "pro-life" even mean at that point?

During yesterday’s press conference, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt was asked whether or not he would sign Senate Bill 1729, the Abolition of Abortion Act introduced by state senator Dusty Deevers. While surgical abortions are prohibited in the state, self-managed abortions are shockingly easy to obtain, over 4000 a year, and this bill would close the gap.

[Deevers told media that the bill would] “take the exception for prenatal homicide, which is abortion, out of the homicide code and make it give equal protection under the law to all lives from the moment of conception to natural death.”

It should be an automatic “yes,” as Stitt is famously pro-life, having campaigned on it for years. He regularly speaks at pro-life events and receives high praise and honor at pro-life galas. Live Action named Stitt their “Life Awardee” of the year only months ago.

Earlier this week, he appeared at Rose Day, the state’s annual pro-life celebration, to tout his creds and how his state banned abortion from the moment of conception and reiterate his promise to “sign every piece of pro-life legislation that hit my desk”

It should not be a hard promise to keep, as Republicans in Oklahoma have a supermajority in the House and Senate, both of which are filled to the brim with professing pro-life politicians who campaigned on their pro-life creds and were supported and encouraged by pro-life leaders…”

Yet when asked to sign the legislation that came across his desk, Stitt immediately balked:

“You know that’s something that I don’t even want to get in to. No.

We want to be a very pro-family state. A pro-life state. We want to support mothers. We want to support children. So, specifics on any bills that are just still being talked about — I think think there are 3,000 bills that are filed every year. I don’t even know who did it. You’re telling me all this information, but from what you said, that doesn’t sound like something I’d be supporting.

Shame on Governor Stitt for opposing this much-needed bill.
